CONTINUING EDUCATION
Betty Landesman, Co-Chair
The CEC approved three proposals for funding in 2008:
• Co-sponsorship of program at the North Carolina Serials Conference, April 2008
• Co-sponsorship of e-resource workshop at Mississippi State University, summer 2008
• Support of development of online course on “Best Practices for Electronic Resources Management”, summer 2008
We received an inquiry from Joyce Tenney about co-sponsoring a serials program for the Maryland Library Association in May. I responded that it was a great idea, and we are awaiting a proposal to put before the CEC for approval
Valerie Bross, CEC Co-Chair, contacted Peter Shepherd of Project Counter to discuss the possibility of presenting the “UKSG Usage Statistics Training Seminar” as a NASIG preconference or other NASIG-sponsored forum. The UKSG will discuss the proposal at their next formal committee meeting.
At the request of PPC, CEC members brainstormed ideas for possible 2008 preconferences and submitted them to Sarah George Wessel. Possible topics include standards, Web 2.0 for serialists, archival access to electronic resources, distance teaching and learning, and open source tools for serialists.

The Amigos Library Services submitted a proposal for this program in March 2007 to request for the funding that was made available due to the withdrawal of the previously approved “CONSER Access Level Record for Serials: Training Material Development” program (see “Events Cancelled” below). The Amigos program proposal was approved by the Board in April 2007.
– Distance Education Development: a Pilot Project, led and coordinated by Betty Landesman ($1000)
In exploring the next steps for our proposed pilot project for developing an online course, we touched base with Virginia Taffurelli, Chair of the ALA ALCTS SS Education Committee and a NASIG CEC member. The new lead is to contact Christa Easton (Stanford University) and Trisha Davis (Ohio State University), who are developing online courses for e-resources and print serials for ALCTS, for possible collaborative opportunities.
• Events cancelled; funds reallocated
– CONSER Access Level Record for Serials: Training Material Development ($1000)
This program will not take place as it was proposed because Les Hawkins of CONSER formally withdrew his request for the grant on March 9, 2007.
• CEC Manual – A subcommittee within CEC has been formed to put a CEC manual together. The subcommittee will be meeting shortly to work on this project.
• Review of Committee Charge – In response to the request from the VP/Pres-Elect of NASIG, the CEC will discuss the committee charge at the annual meeting in June to see if it needs any adjustment or modification.
• New England Technical Services Librarians (NETSL) — Dodie Gaudet, the VP/President-Elect of NETSL, contacted the CEC in March inquiring possibilities of offering some programs in conjunction with NASIG. In response, the CEC requested additional information about the kind of projects NETSL had in mind and also provided two possibilities for NETSL to consider: 1) collaboration on a non-conference event such as co-sponsoring or jointly planning a preconference that is serials-related in a broad sense; 2) Some of the sessions that have been presented at NASIG annual conferences could be incorporated to NETSL conference, if interested.

CONTINUING EDUCATION COMMITTEE
Paoshan Yue and Betty Landesman, Co-Chairs
In early November, the CEC forwarded to the NASIG Program Planning Committee (PPC) an idea for a pre-conference on the “Metadata Standards and Applications” course. The PPC liked it and asked for a formal proposal. A small group of CEC members (Betty Landesman, Valerie Bross, Kay Johnson, and Paoshan Yue) worked together on this project. Consulting with Steve Shadle from the University of Washington and the course developer, Diane Hillmann from Cornell University, this group put together a formal proposal and submitted it to the PPC on December 7, 2006.
The proposal has been officially accepted by the PPC, and the pre-conference is scheduled for Wednesday May 30th, 8 AM – 4:30 PM and Thursday May 31st, 8 AM – 3PM in Louisville, Kentucky.
This workshop was developed by ALCTS/LC as part of the Cataloging for the 21st Century series. It provides an overview of basic concepts for 21st century bibliographic control of digital libraries, focusing on non-MARC metadata standards. The workshop examines different types of metadata standards and applications, comparing and contrasting them to the traditional cataloging environment. The goal of the workshop is to help prepare catalogers and other information professionals to work within the emerging digital information environment so that they can relate their existing knowledge to the new digital environment.
We are very excited that Diane Hillmann, the course developer, will be the lead instructor of this pre-conference workshop. From our discussion with Diane, it has become clear to us that the serials community needs to connect itself to the metadata world. In the ever-more-digital environment, the distinction between monographs and serials is becoming more and more blurred. We believe that the sooner we, the serialists, start connecting the two communities, the better we will position ourselves for the future. The CEC wishes to thank the PPC and the Board for the support of this program.

2006 PROGRAMS AND BUDGET
An e-journal / e-resources workshop at Mississippi State University was successfully completed in July. A distance education program for SCCTP trainers to develop online teaching techniques was also completed in September, where seven SCCTP trainers took part in the “Teaching Courses in a Live Online Environment” taught by the Continuing Education Librarian of Amigos Library Services in four live online sessions.
Additionally, due to the cancellation of three planned events as noted in the 2006 annual report (April), $2,250 of the 2006 CEC budget became available for reallocation. An effort was made in early June to put out a call for program proposals to dispose the fund, but it did not generate new proposals.
Two CEC members, Steve Oberg and Paoshan Yue, also serve on the Library School Outreach Task Force (LSOTF). They participated in group discussions on planning a NASIG Library School Ambassadors pilot project, which will be proposed by the LSOTF.
2007 BUDGET AND PROGRAMS
The 2007 co-chairs put out a call for programming ideas and firm proposals in July. As a result, several proposals and ideas were received that have been incorporated in the 2007 budget proposal. These include three events which CEC has supported in the past and two new programs regarding CONSER access level record for serials and metadata standards and applications. Funds have also been requested for a pilot project to develop an online training course.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The Continuing Education Committee (CEC) continued to support a variety of serial-related programming last year. In addition to proposals supported, two program proposals were forwarded to the Program Planning Committee resulting in development of pre-conferences for the 2006 Annual Conference. There is a need next year for the Committee to review pre-conferences and conference programs to determine what programs, if any, should be repackaged as continuing education programs.
Next year it is recommended that the NASIG logo be included in sponsored programs websites. This is in addition to distribution of the NASIG brochures and the displaying of the NASIG banner.
The Committee delayed further development of income-generating distance education models. A fundamental question for the Board concerned who would incur the start-up costs if distance education programs were developed within NASIG. An alternative approach for the Committee may be to provide added value to NASIG membership by offering discounts or scholarships for participation in serial related distance education programming to members or potential members.
We want to take this opportunity to thank the 2005/6 NASIG Board and the Continuing Education Committee membership for its support last year. It has been a pleasure serving NASIG as committee chairs.
